The experts with South Miami Heart Center’s Vascular Screening Program perform noninvasive screening for vascular diseases such as aortic aneurysm, carotid artery disease and peripheral artery disease. These potentially life-threatening conditions often have no symptoms. However, with early detection, they can be effectively treated.

Vascular screening can help diagnose the following conditions:

• Peripheral artery disease (PAD)

  – this “silent killer” is caused by hardening of the arteries. PAD affects nearly 10 million Americans and can lead to gangrene.

• Carotid artery disease

  – a narrowing of the artery that supplies blood to the brain, this disease can cause a debilitating stroke.

• Aortic aneurysm

  – a weakened, bulging area in the major vessel that supplies blood to the body, an aneurysm can cause sudden death if it ruptures.
